In an upcoming book called Opening Skinner's Box, Lauren Slater repeats a thirty year old experiment where nine people got admitted to psychiatric emergency wards by spuriously hearing voices.
Thirty years later, schizophrenia is less in fashion than psychosis and depression... but it seems that, in the words of a prominent psychiatrist asked to react to the author's similar results:
I think doctors just don't like to say, 'I don't know'.
Especially, it seems, when the voices are saying: «Thud».
